Ghana's Senior High School Education would be extended from three to six years, according to Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
This move is part of a larger push in Ghana to improve secondary education by focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Dr. Adutwum also stated that after the county education system is implemented, the number of high schools in Ghana will be reduced from 13,000 to around 2,500.
"The facilities we're giving are similar to those found in any high school, and each of these schools has a library, biology, chemistry, and physics lab." "When we open those schools in 2023, you'll see how we'll deliver six years of quality secondary education, not three years plus some three years of outdated middle school-led teaching that we call high school," he told journalists in Accra on Tuesday, December 14. Dr. Adutwum previously stated that the government is committed to improving STEM education in the country.
He stated that the administration would collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, including private sector operators, to provide much-needed infrastructure for STEM-related institutions, such as laboratories, workshops, and lecture halls. "With the government pursuing initiatives to raise the Gross Tertiary Enrollment Ratio (GTER) from 18.84 percent to 40 percent by 2030, it is in our interest to continue to improve the infrastructural foundation of the various tertiary institutions," Dr. Adutwum stated. "We are all aware of the many ongoing projects on our tertiary campuses, some of which have been abandoned for years, while others require urgent additional Government funds to be completed," he continued.
